ABOUT CHARLES BAUGHMAN

PERSONAL BIOGRAPHY

Charles Baughman is a nationally known artist as well as a long-time art educator.  He received his Bachelor's degree in Studio Arts and Art History from Kearney State College in Kearney, Nebraska and his Master of Fine Arts in Painting and Sculpture from Wichita State University.  Charles has instructed at several Wichita area colleges, museums and art centers.  He and his wife, Kate Pepper, created The Art Park campus in 2007 and have owned the Monart School of Art since 2004. Charles loves seeing that light bulb moment when a student really gets the material being taught and runs with it to create their own works of art.  As far as his own work, Charles paints on cradle boxes that he builds from wood and is frequently found using donated paints that would otherwise be destined for the landfill. His unique style is inspired by impressionistic landscapes but with the energy and motion of a Jackson Pollock splatter painting.  Charles uses sticks and his fingers to create bold, dripping landscapes which he calls "splatterscapes." As a way of signing his work Charles adheres a heart shaped rock he collected in the area to the front of each of his paintings. This unusual signature represents his love of nature and brings a true piece of the area to his paintings.
